Is there a difference between a Staffordshire terrier and a pit bull? I just thought Staffordshire was the more official, less stigmatized name for the same thing. (honestly asking, not being smarmy)

“These breeds are essentially the same dogs but have been bred for different purposes and/or size standards since the mid 1930's. Some are even dual registered (i.e., registered as an American Pit Bull Terrier with the UKC and as an American Staffordshire Terrier with the AKC).”

Staffordshire is typically smaller, they normally don’t crack 50 pounds.

I have a German Shepherd and American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He’s typically right on the dot at 46 pounds. It’s a great size. His mother (the AmStaff) was 45 pounds. When we got him I was like are we sure he won’t take after dad and end up around 80 pounds? They were like, we think he’ll level out in the mid 40's. I was shocked they were so accurate. Highest weight he’s ever been is 48 and lowest (as an adult) was 44.
